Young Musician 2017 Entry

(Please read this first)

Entries are invited for our 24th Young Musician of the Year competition to be held on Saturday 4th November 2017 at Polam Hall School, Grange Road, Darlington. The event is organised jointly by the Rotary Clubs of Darlington and Northallerton, and is open to young musicians aged 8 to 18 living within approximately a 20 mile radius of either town.  It is also the local first round of the prestigious national Rotary Young Musician competition.

We are pleased to welcome Margaret Smith LRAM GRSM as this year’s Adjudicator.  Margaret trained at the Royal Academy of Music as a pianist and violinist.  Her career was in musical education, mostly as Director of Music in a prestigious independent girls’ school in Yorkshire.   She has been  a moderator of Performing and Composition for an Examining Board.  She has made significant contributions to the musical life of Leeds for many years, and has adjudicated at various Rotary competitions in the past.

The competition format is unchanged.  There are 3 Instrumental Sections – Pianoforte, Woodwind & Brass, and Strings (including harp and acoustic guitar).  During the day each Section competes in 3 Age Groups – A (School Years 4-7), B (Years 8-10) and C (Years 11-13) as defined by each entrant’s age on 1 Sep 2017. The winner in each of these 9 Classes will then be invited to play in the Grand Final at 7.00 pm on the same day.

Please ensure that you are available to take part in the evening’s Final if you win your Class during the day.

The entry fee is £6. The prizes in each Class are £20 for the winner, £10 for second, and £5 for third, and the top 4 competitors each get a signed certificate.  In addition the overall winner receives a further prize of £30 and holds the Rotary Young Musician Trophy for a year.  The winner and one other will then be invited to compete in the second round of the national Rotary Competition at York in March 2018.  All competitors will also get their own personal comments form back from the Adjudicator.

There are no set pieces;  your choice of music does not necessarily need to be classical, and anyone wishing to play jazz or blues pieces is welcome to do so.  There will be an Official Accompanist available on the day but prior notice will be required if you wish to use him/her. The grade standards and time limits for each class are:

Age Group A:  Minimum Grade 2, piece(s) to be no more than 4 minutes long

Age Group B:  Minimum Grade 4, piece(s) to be no more than 5 minutes long

Age Group C:  Minimum Grade 6, piece(s) to be no more than 7 minutes long

Please keep strictly to these time limits to be fair to all competitors.

If you have any difficulty, you can download and print this PDF  entry form 2017 to post with your cheque to the address on the form.  We welcome entries from either Parents/Guardians or Teachers so long as both parties support the entry.  The closing date is Monday 30th Oct 2017, but it does assist in the organisation of the event if entries can be returned earlier.
